This is the Nike Zoom Hyperflight Premium "Beijing Lion" edition which features a metallic copper, black and challenge red color way. The pair was released in a series called "The Tale of Three Cities" aka the "China Pack" in which three premium Hyperflight models would pay homage to China's three major urban cities (Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzou). Each pair draws inspiration from an animal that serves as a symbol for the city. This pair is the "Lion" chosen to represent Beijing, the capital of China, which has always been known as a place for the Emperors, Empresses, and royalty to reside. First it was a place of retreat for the royal families and after the 1600's it was named China's capital by the Qing Dynasty. In China the Lion is said to possess mythical protective powers and that is why the "Chinese Guardian Lion" (known as "Shi") statues are seen all over the capital in front of palaces, imperial tombs, and government buildings. This pair dons a metallic copper synthetic upper featuring an all over embossed weave pattern often seen on royal decorations and fabrics. The insole features the chinese symbol meaning "Jing" for capital city. The outsole is your typical icy translucent rubber which gives this pair a really cool contrast between the upper and sole.
The Nike Zoom Hyperflight was designed by designer Eric Avar in memory of the late Bill Bowerman. He designed the shoe as Bill would have, super light and with simplicity at the forefront. The Hyperflight draws inspiration from the silhouette of a track spike and Avar's intent was to take the standard basketball shoe style and strip down to the core function and parts. That is why the Hyperflight was the lightest basketball shoe at the time made of mostly an the upper, a half perforated plastic-like material and a rubber outsole. This shoe was completely innovative and breakthrough as it led the way for many of today's sneakers like Hyperfuse technology and multicolored non-leather uppers.
This pair was released limitedly along with the rest of the pack and any true Nike collector should add it to their collection.
